Midi Versus the Maxi Dress

The heat has meant that we can get out those dresses from the back of the wardrobe, maybe not so relevant to those in the South East but the North has not seen a decent hot spell in four years. It is an exciting time. The fashion pages are full of news on dresses and tips on how to wear them. Fashion journalist Sarah Mower seems to have developed an aversion to the onslaught of maxi dresses that have hit the high street in her article on the Midi versus the Maxi Dress. She tells us how Miuccia Prada’s resort show of flowered and polka-dotted dresses have a ‘classy restraint so against every current trend’.

Jess Cartner-Morley, the Guardian's fashion editor tells us how to wear them – she does a ‘how to wear’ section on the website and has done a short video giving advice on the Maxi Dress. Its a short video, you just need to get past the trailor advert.  If you can't download it just read the short article 'to the Maxi' instead. Hilary Alexander of the Telegraph goes for a more vintage and fairytale inspired theme for her maxi dress article with dresses ranging from £45 to £3000.

No matter what the trend is you can’t go far wrong with a black jersey maxi dress. Get the styling right and it is timeless, it would suit many an occasion dressed up or down and can be worn in all seasons. Jersey is a super maxi dress fabric; it is so comfortable, doesn’t crease and hangs beautifully.

Get the Polka dots fabric right and you can also make a timeless dress. Be it Samantha Cameron’s dress with a nipped in waist and puffed sleeves, the stylish vintage style dress, designed as part of M&S’s 125th anniversary,  Julia Roberts vintage style dress in Pretty Woman or Miuccia Prada’s Polka Midi Dress, whatever the trend as long as you are making it yourself you can always alter the length/ style to suit the trend or what suits you the most.
